Dad performs his world famous card trick – which seems to consist of dropping the entire pack on the floor. Or possibly this is a photographic experiment – Gasp in wonder as the camera freezes time! Witness the spectacle of playing cards floating in mid air!

Either way, Grandad doesn’t appear too impressed.

Auntie Lil, Uncle Fred, James and Dad by a fallen tree. I thought at first it might have been that great old hollow tree stump in Bushy Park, but now I’m not so sure – there’s a see-saw in the background, and houses too, so it must be somewhere else I think.

Nice to see both Dad and Aunt Lil wafting cigarette smoke close to a child. Those were the days.

I think these must be a couple of POWs too, judging by the fact that they’re not in uniform, and not smiling quite so much.
Dad is second from the right with the slightly less jaunty of the two berets.

Dad mentioned a couple of times that they looked after German prisoners of war before they were sent home again after the war. One of these guys is Fritz who by all accounts wrote letters and sent Christmas cards for many years afterwards. I think one of the letters exists still, but I’m not sure if I have it.

Group shot of Dad’s (insert appropriate army term here – platoon?). Dad is second on the left at the back. I’m guessing this might be the Army Pay Corps at Whitchurch. I particularly like the look of the chubby chap next to Dad.
